Sew & Tell: The Aztec Vest

January 10, 2014 by Heather Damron

Today, we’re featuring Janice’s take on the Aztec Hooded Vest by See Kate Sew! The Aztec Hooded Vest is a wonderful unisex pattern and a great layering piece for all climates!
So – without further ado – off to you, Janice!

The fabric I used for the outer vest is a deep purple 21 wale corduroy from Robert Kaufman.  The inner lining fabric is Japanese 100% cotton fabric from Yuwa – the designer is Anyan and is available here:  https://the-fabric-stash.com/shop/products/13/yuwa-fabrics-can-can-pink-by-anyan-2/.  I ordered the separating zipper from Zipperstop on Etsy (https://www.etsy.com/shop/zipperstop) and I HIGHLY recommend them!  I’m not a big zipper person, but am hoping to work on this skill more this year, and I will definitely be ordering from Zipperstop again – their selection and pricing is great!

I chose this pattern because my daughter hates wearing jackets.  She fights us every day when we try to put one on her, so I thought a vest might be a great alternative.  Luckily, we live in Southern California so we can most likely get away with just a vest as an outer layer!

I made the pattern in a size 4 with 5 length, and it fits perfectly.  If I were to make another, I would make it a size 5 with 6 length to get more wear out of it.  My favorite features are the cool pockets that allow you to highlight your contrast fabric (if you want) and the oversize hood – great for keeping the rain or sun off your little one’s face.  I did have some issues getting the top of the zipper installed, but that’s probably because I’m not the best zipper person in the world.  It’s a work in progress….

My daughter really likes the vest, and just adored the pockets – she got a TON of shells in them during our photo shoot on the beach!

Janice, thank you so much for sharing your sewing talents with us! Much appreciated!
