I would like to know... I serge most of my seams, should I press them open before I serge, or should I press them to one side after they have been serged. I want to end up with a professional looking item of course. Thoughts and opinions please!!! Thanks!

The teacher who taught me to sew always made the point about pressing as you go, so it is automatic for me to put up the ironing board at the same time as I switch on the machine! And I can certainly see the difference in what I make.

Years ago when my kids were young, I made a lot of their clothes - out of necessity. I was rarely satisfied with the result - they looked 'homemade' - so I quit sewing and pursued other passions. Now getting close to retirement, I have taken up quilting and since learned the importance of pressing. I rarely sew a seam without pressing it and my quilting looks professional. Ah, the beauty of wisdom acquired - even later in life!!

Yes, pressing makes a huge difference in your finished product! Growing up, I remember seeing many formal dresses (and even a set of bridesmaids' dresses!) made by my friends' moms that weren't pressed properly and it really affected the look and even fit of the garments. It especially makes a huge difference on long side seams and sleeves. The only times I don't press my seams are if it's an experiment or something that's purely functional and I'm in a rush. This is great info, and I think pressing seams is something that people who teach themselves to sew from online sources often overlook (not their fault--it's that many people writing tutorials don't emphasize that step!). Thanks!

I press my fabric before I start patchwork. I use starch liberaly too. I keep pressing and starching up to the actual quilting. Sometime the cotton feels like paper by then, but that is fine: it will all wash out. The thing I do need to be more careful about is checking my measurements after sewing up the blocks. I am lazy with that !

I've always ironed by fabric before cutting it and then before sewing the pieces together, but now I definitely think I will be ironing as I go too. I really hate ironing, but I love my finished pieces to turn out well. Thank you so much for this helpful and clear information!

I'm terrible about pressing. But to be honest, my ironing table is 15 years old, in desperate need of a new cover and my iron is just as old and terrible! But I do have an iron on my Christmas list. Thanks for the tips!!

I always press when I sew, but I never knew why you should press your stitches. Good to know as I do make things to sell. I'm always trying to make my work better, and this was super helpful! Thanks!
